Christian Science is a prayer-based healing system practiced by people of all backgrounds, a church, a way of life, and a problem-solving religion. It was founded in 1879 by Mary Baker Eddy with this purpose: “to reinstate primitive Christianity with its lost element of healing.” You’ll find Christian Science churches and societies in every major city in the United States and in major cities all over the world. The “Christian” half of the name , of course, relates to the life and work of Christ Jesus, our Master, Way-Shower, and Savior. The “Science” half of the name refers to God’s laws that govern the universe. Christian Science is NOT Scientology. See this video.
Who is Mary Baker Eddy?
Mary Baker Eddy (1821–1910) was an influential American author, teacher, and religious leader, noted for her pioneering ideas about spirituality and health, which she named Christian Science. She shared those ideas in her major work, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, first published in 1875.
Are Christian Scientists free to seek medical treatment?
Yes. While many Christian Scientists have consistently found this prayer-based system of healing to be a reliable means of health care, they are free to make their own decisions and health choices.
What do Christian Scientists mean when they talk about healing through prayer?
Prayer in Christian Science is rooted in the nature of God as good and in each individual’s relationship to God. Healing prayer, whether it relates to physical or mental wellbeing, is based on the understanding that God loves and cares for everyone. Every human need is met by divine Love.
