Valentine’s Day began today with Hoosier hearts filled with gratitude for Nick Goepper’s winning an Olympic bronze, as the USA swept the men’s freeskiing slopestyle in Krasnaya, Polyana, Russia. Goepper, born in Fort Wayne and raised in Lawrenceburg, Indiana was in the trio with Joss Christensen, gold, and Gus Kenworthy, silver.
Goepper, 19, nicknamed “Heartthrob” at the 2013 Dew Tour in Breckenridge, Colorado, where he took first place, proved to the world how someone from Indiana could accomplish such a feat on snow. The Fort Wayne Journal Gazette quoted Goepper, speaking of the first time for his sport in the Olympics, “We couldn’t have asked for a better way to debut this sport to the world.”
