Autism? Forget what you know and start thinking by Anna Matthai for Life Positive

Autism? We hear a great deal today about this phenomenon of the human mind. Here in Indiana, there are many clinics, day programs, rehab centers devoted to the care and education of those diagnosed with this mental challenge, and the numbers of children labeled “autistic” are growing. My colleague from India, Annu Matthai, writing for LifePositive, shares an inspiring story and a view of some higher, more spiritual thinking. Here’s Annu:

The sky’s the limit.

That’s what American Jacob Barnett has proved by becoming a mathematician, astrophysics researcher and PhD student at the tender age of 17.

That would be quite an accomplishment for anybody. But what makes his story even more remarkable is that this young man was expected to be unable to learn to read or even to function in society. Diagnosed with severe autism at the age of two, Jacob’s mother Kristine, was told her son would probably never be able to tie his shoes. Yet he went on to accomplish so much more than that!
